In honor of National Seashell Day today, the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum has a myriad of activities planned for the annual event.

From 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Pam Rambo of i Love Shelling, will have a signing for her debut book, "Shellanguage."

Rambo said she has thought about shellanguage since she began her i Love Shelling blog in 2009. However, the inspiration came to Rambo after meeting a woman at the Sanibel Shell Festival back in March who spoke her same language.

"She started spitting out all these shell words," Rambo said. "I looked at her and said 'You have no idea how much you just inspired me.'"

Following the festival, Rambo came home and started working on the book, which is self-published, a little at a time.

"It was a good project for me to do because I'm happiest when I'm creating," she said. "It was fun to do something so out of my element."

"Shellanguage" is available now at MacIntosh Books, the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, Suncatchers' Dream, Congress Jewelers, Captiva Cruises, Tween Waters and iloveshelling.com.

"It's the perfect gift for National Seashell Day," Rambo said.

In addition to Rambo's book signing, the museum will have a 20 percent discount on everything in the museum store, except final price items. Visitors will also have the opportunity to make their own shell jewelry at 11:30 a.m. or shell critters at 3:30 p.m. Also, Dr. Leal, the science director and curator of the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, will give a presentation on "Amazing Sanibel Shells" at 2 p.m.

"We're excited to celebrate the second annual National Seashell Day with the local community and all of our visitors," said Melanie Moraga, assistant director of the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum. "I'd like to encourage everyone to join us and come out to the museum for a day filled with fun for all."

Additionally, the museum will have its daily tank talks offered throughout the day.

"You should make the Shell Museum your first stop before you hit the beach," Moraga said.

With valid ID, Florida residents will receive free youth admission with the purchase of one adult admission. The offer is valid until Sept. 4. Active military members and their dependents get in free.

Regular museum admission for adults is $15, youth (12-17) is $9, children (5-11) is $7 and children under five are free. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
