History in motion

Adventures in Paradise has reintroduced its historical trolley tours for the season.

Josh Stewart, who runs Adventures in Paradise with his family, said the tours stemmed from their own love of the island.

"We wanted to share the history with as many people as we could," Stewart said.

Adventures in Paradise began offering their historical trolley tours Thanksgiving weekend. The tours will run three days a week until April.

Stewart's family bought the two trolleys that are used for the historical tours in 1994.

"They were built by a company called Cable Car Company which was just northeast of Orlando. They no longer exist, so they're really limited edition now. They were built by the same guys who built the cable cars for Disney," Stewart said.

Stewart said the trolleys depart from Port Sanibel Marina and at various hotels around Sanibel. Some of the stops on the tour include the Sanibel Lighthouse and the location of the original ferry dock.

"The trolleys take up to 20 passengers," Stewart said. "We cruise to various spots, typically on the east end and the middle of the island."

On certain days, the trolley will make a pitstop at the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village, letting passengers explore the grounds.

"A portion of each ticket will go to the village," Stewart said.

The cost for the trolley tours are $35 per person. The trolley departs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:30 a.m. and returns by 11: 30 a.m. The trolley tours will run through April. To make a reservation, call 239-472-8443.
