Charter fishing for families during cooler months

February 16, 2018

While the winter months may not seem like the perfect time for fishing the Pine Island Sound to the east of Captiva Island, it may be the ideal situation for families looking for fun and relaxation.

Nathan Sklorenko, charter captain with Venture Out Charters, explained that the spring and summer months are the busiest for those seeking big trophy fish, like tarpon. The lower water temperatures and winds that come with the colder months, along with the cold snaps, are not right for that type of fish.

For families, however, a winter charter ride may provide that bonding time.

"You can still get out there and fish," he said. "You're just doing it for different stuff."

He recently chartered a family with young children.

"We caught lots of ladyfish, lots of small trout," Sklorenko said, noting that they are smaller fish but found by the dozens, making for a happy trip. "Where they're catching a fish every other cast."

"It's still something to bend the rod and that's important for them," he added.

For the adults on the boat, other fish can be found.

"Right now a lot of trout are around," Sklorenko said. "Tripletail's been biting pretty good."

There are sheepshead, redfish and some snook.

"It's just a different ballgame," he said.

When faced with a cold front, snapper and black drum may be caught.

Asked about fishing spots, Sklorenko recommended Redfish Pass and Captiva Pass, the grass flats within the Pine Island Sound and around Captiva, as well as Pejuan Cove off of Cayo Costa.

Another alternative is fishing around the Sanibel bridges.

"Whitebait and threadfin heron," he said of what can be found.

Another plus, Sklorenko noted, it is not snowing.

"You're still in Florida," he said. "It's still nice."
