A man in his mid-20s suffered a gunshot wound to the head at a Cape Coral gun range and was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Cape Coral police responded to Shoot Center at 1122 Del Prado Boulevard S. on a reported shooting at 1:45 p.m. Friday.

No details as to how the incident occurred were immediately available.

Lt. Dana Coston stated that there is an active investigation on the nature of the shooting. It is being determined whether the action was self-inflicted, mechanical failure, or shooter error.

There were no other reported injuries by customers or members of staff, and police have no reason to believe anyone else was involved other than the man injured.

The Cape Coral Police Department sent detectives, forensics personnel, and victim advocates to the center.

A Ping4 alert was sent to the public notifying residents of heavy police activity in the area. That presence is expected to last until at least 6 p.m.

More information will be released when family members of the injured man are notified.
