Volunteers are being sought to narrate one type of adventure trip offered by Captiva Cruises.

In conjunction with the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, the excursion boat company is accepting applications from individuals interested in serving as docents for its daily afternoon Dolphin & Wildlife Cruise. The cruise runs from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and tours the area of the Pine Island Sound.

Richard Finkel, educator for Captiva Cruises, explained that they currently have 10 people who volunteer their time to provide meaningful narratives for passengers in the ongoing program.

Captiva Cruises is accepting applications for those interested in serving as volunteer docents for its daily afternoon Dolphin & Wildlife Cruise aboard the Lady Chadwick.

"We've had this partnership with SCCF since 1992, so it's a collaborative effort," he said.

Docents will share information pertaining to the area's natural and cultural history.

"It's a great opportunity to share information with people of all ages, information pertaining to the natural history and cultural history of our area," Finkel said. "It's great to have local people who are interested in sharing knowledge about the environment."

Training is provided, so those interested do not have to be knowledgeable experts to apply.

"We would go through a training process," he said.

"This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are interested in learning about the Pine Island Sound and its wildlife and sharing that knowledge," Finkel added.

The cruise takes place aboard the 65-foot-long Lady Chadwick, the fleet's flagship.

"This cruise is very popular with families and young kids," he said, noting that the number of passengers can range from a dozen, to over 100 - who the volunteers provide the narrations for.

Applicants must be comfortable on a boat and enjoy being out on the water.

"Docents should be able to be out in all kinds of weather," Finkel said.

They must have a sincere commitment to conservation, as well as superb public speaking and interpersonal skills. An enthusiastic and positive manner and being comfortable with people of all ages and backgrounds is sought. Teaching experience is helpful, but it is not a requirement to apply.

"Teaching experience is definitely a plus, but not required," he said.

Finkel noted that people who live in the area year-round is also preferred.
