Hirdie Girdie reopens with new artists

November 6, 2019
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

The Hirdie Girdie Gallery on Sanibel opened for season on Nov. 4, welcoming two new artists.

Basket artist Nancy Giffin and her husband, Bill, are originally from Massachusetts and have always been inspired by American history. For over 25 years, their artistic commitment has been to preserve American heritage by creating authentic reproductions of Nantucket baskets and Shaker boxes in their Cape Coral studio. The couple works as a team to produce pieces that are timeless in their simplicity, beauty and usefulness. They also enjoy designing and creating custom pieces of the traditional forms.

Always interested in art and horses, oil painter Martha Dodd earned a degree in animal science and became a physical therapist for racehorses. She spent her spare time drawing and painting the horses, which led to a decision to pursue a career as an equine artist. Dodd soon discovered that she loved to paint birds, fish and people, as well. She has been a muralist for years and now is focused on portraits, but still creates landscapes and seascapes. Her work is noted for its photorealism, detail and passion.
