Focus on local activities, news

January 28, 2020
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

To the editor:

I feel that the Jan. 15, 2020, "Word on the Island" was very inappropriate, unnecessary and out of place. The question was "What do you think of the president's recent actions related to Iran?" Most of us islanders read your weekly newspaper to learn about local activities and news on the islands. The "Word on the Island" segment could well be interesting to hear opinions on island traffic, water quality, local politics and other Sanibel/Captiva issues. We do not need to read five peoples' opinions on a highly political issue. Our country is already highly divided, and the national news is too upsetting to even read or watch anymore. On our peaceful little island retreat, the last thing we need is to carry that controversy and debate into the Island Reporter. Please leave the nastiness and schisms to CNN, the New York Times, Fox News, and spend your efforts to communicating important local issues and news to us.
