Thank you to Sanibel, surrounding communities

February 11, 2020

To the editor:

With cooperation from the Bay Pines VA Healthcare system, Songs and Stories for Soldiers - a local foundation - conducted its third annual campaign to obtain shoes and socks for homeless veterans in Southwest Florida.

Many organizations on Sanibel helped this year, with 567 pair of shoes and 1,245 pairs of socks donated, well over the initial goals. Across the Causeway, St. Columbkille Church alone donated 193 pairs of shoes and 660 pairs of socks, all included in our totals. The shoes and socks will be distributed by the VA homeless shelter in St. Petersburg, as well as by VA community-based healthcare services centers from St. Petersburg to Naples.

On behalf of the hundreds of men and women veterans who will benefit from these shoes and socks, we say thank you, Sanibel. Plans are already in the works to expand the program next year with additional participants, as well as getting schoolchildren involved.

One in 10 veterans in our country today are homeless, and giving these men and women a pair of shoes can help them on their journey toward getting a job and taking care of themselves.
