April 15, 2020
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation reported that sea turtle nesting season officially begins today, and it is already off to a great start. This morning, two of its sea turtle program staff found the first loggerhead sea turtle nest on the east end of Sanibel.

In addition, a Captiva resident called the SCCF hotline on April 14 to report a loggerhead false crawl. It was the first loggerhead crawl and the second false crawl of the nesting season. A rare leatherback made a false crawl on the east end of Sanibel on April 1.

The SCCF provided the following tips to help keep the beaches sea turtle friendly:

- Turn off or shield all lights that are visible from the beach. Do not use flashlights or cell phone lights on the beach. If necessary, use amber or red LED bulbs.

- Remove all beach furniture and equipment from the beach at night.

- Dispose of fishing line properly to avoid wildlife entanglement.

- Fill in large holes that can trap hatchlings and nesting sea turtles.

- Do not disturb nesting turtles - please do not to get too close, shine lights on, or take flash photos of nesting sea turtles.
