AmazonSmile benefits island charities

April 21, 2020

To the editor:

The coronavirus crisis has led to the cancellation of many fund-raising events of Sanibel-Captiva charities and has reduced the number of people visiting facilities run by those charities. While Amazon has not reported the amount of the increase in its business since the crisis began, The New York Times cited a source that said it could be 50 times. Yikes. What do these two seemingly unrelated thoughts have in common? The answer is, if you purchase goods on AmazonSmile, a Website operated by Amazon with the same products, prices, and shopping features as Amazon.com, the AmazonSmile Foundation donates 0.5 percent of the purchase price of eligible products to the charity of your choice. You can find lots of island charities that have registered for this opportunity including CROW, SCCF, F.I.S.H., Sanibel Community Association (Community House), Sanibel Historical Museum and Village and CHR. My wife and I have designated CROW as our charity of choice. Amazon states that every item available for purchase on Amazon.com is also available on AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com) at the same price. You will see eligible products marked "Eligible for AmazonSmile donation" on the product detail pages.

This is not intended as a pitch for Amazon. There are plenty of reasons to dislike Amazon including its adverse effect on local businesses and the way it treats its employees, especially during the crisis. But if you do buy from Amazon and you do not use AmazonSmile, you are leaving money on the table that could go to your favorite island charity. Its free money just waiting to be directed to your favorite island charity. All you have to do is make your purchase on AmazonSmile instead of Amazon.com. The individual impact may be small, but the impact of many will be meaningful. I encourage those Amazon buyers who have not switched to AmazonSmile to do so now. It won't cost you a thing and you will help island charities.
