On June 10, Sanibel Captiva Community Bank presented a $10,000 check to the Sanibel Sea School in support of Octifest and the school's scholarship program.

The Sanibel Sea School's annual fundraiser, Octifest on the Beach, was scheduled for April 4 but was canceled as a result of the pandemic. Even after the cancellation, the bank responded with a donation.

"Community support is central to who we are as an organization," bank President Craig Albert said. "In light of the crisis we're all coping with, it's more important than ever for us to support local organizations like Sanibel Sea School who does such important and unique work with this community's youth."

All proceeds from Octifest and will go directly to the scholarship program for children. The Sanibel Sea School has granted 100 percent of scholarships requested - its policy is "all you have to do is ask." Tuition covered by the school is sponsored by donors like the bank and ensures that every child has equal access to an ocean education.

"We are so thankful to have support from Sanibel Captiva Community Bank," Director Nicole Finnicum said. "It is wonderful to have community support for our programs, it allows us to grant scholarships and fund our landlocked programs."

The school's landlocked program includes its work with other local organizations, such as The Heights Foundation and Child Care of Southwest Florida, to share the ocean with underserved children. Part of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation family, the Sanibel Sea School's mission is to improve the ocean's future, one person at a time.
